Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. This annual event is part of Read Across America, a nationwide initiative designed to encourage a love of reading in children through schools and community partnerships.

United Way of Orange County is joining the celebration by hosting reading sessions on March 2–6 and March 9–12. In honor of our 100-year anniversary, we are pledging to read 100 books in partnership with the Y-Reads program through the YMCA. Through our partner agencies, we have the opportunity to reach children across all five local independent school districts.

Volunteers can sign up for one-hour shifts during the two-week period and will read two to three short books to small groups of children in the Y-Reads program. Books will be provided — we just need your voice and enthusiasm to help show children that reading can be fun and exciting.

If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to Laci Gibbens at 409-882-4297 or lgibbens@dow.com.

If you need assistance at your volunteer location or the day of the event contact the YMCA coordinator, Janet Manley at 409-790-7273   jmanley@ymcasetx.org
