The Dean Granger Memorial 5K brought together a record 200 registered runners, families and community supporters on October 3 as part of Orangetober, continuing a longtime Orange tradition centered on community, remembrance and giving back.

Held in partnership with the City of Orange, this year’s race introduced several new elements, including the first-ever mascot race and a kids race. The additions expanded the event beyond the traditional 5K and created more opportunities for families and community members to participate in the celebration.

The Dean Granger Memorial 5K began in 2014 with a meaningful goal: to create an event where 100% of the proceeds would directly support United Way of Orange County and its mission of helping local families. Dean Granger and Al Granger cared deeply about United Way and its impact on the local community, and the event was created as a way to give back in a lasting way.

Following Dean Granger’s passing, the race was renamed in his memory to honor the legacy behind the event. For more than a decade, the race has continued to bring people together around a shared commitment to giving back, pausing only when necessary during events such as Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic.

What began years ago at Granger Chevrolet has grown into a major community event. This year’s partnership with the City of Orange brought the race together with Orangetober, creating a larger community celebration that included local vendors, sponsors, the kids race and the inaugural mascot race.

Participants also enjoyed traditions that have become part of the event, including a free T-shirt and goodie bag.

At the heart of the Dean Granger Memorial 5K is its commitment to giving back. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to United Way of Orange County, helping support local agencies and programs serving the community in areas including education, health and financial stability.

The turnout of 200 registered runners marked a new milestone for the event and reflected the continued support it has received from the Orange community. Year after year, Team Granger and community supporters have helped the race grow while maintaining the purpose at its core.

The Dean Granger Memorial 5K is more than a race. It is a tradition, a tribute to Dean Granger and a meaningful way for the community to come together and support the people of Orange County.
